Faith-Based Mental Health Counseling in Ministry Certificate Program
About Program:
Earn a Certificate in Faith-Based Mental Health Counseling. This program is designed for:
- Church, community, non-profit, and para-church leaders desiring to establish faith-based counseling practices in the church and other spiritual communities.
- Students seeking clinical training and supervision in pastoral and spiritual psychotherapy counseling ministries.
- Students to explore ways to integrate theology into their pastoral or spiritual counseling practice.
- The program is led by licensed and trained faith-based mental health counseling professionals, pastoral counselors, board-certified chaplains, spiritual psychotherapists, and other trained spiritual practitioners.
Course Curriculum and Requirements
Each semester will consist of 6 classes @ $300 per course and $300 Practicum

Intro to Pastoral Care and Counseling – $300
- Students will understand the dynamics of pastoral care and counseling.
- Students will be able to understand one’s own spiritual journey through critical analysis.
- Students will be able to reflect and interpret one’s own life story both psychologically and theologically.
- Students will understand transference and countertransference in the counseling relationship.
- Students will understand the ethics and boundaries of the counseling relationship.
- Students will understand how to operate as a caregiver in a ministerial context.
Practicum I – 25 hours – $300
- Students will demonstrate the ability to provide a critical analysis of one’s own spiritual/tradition in the helping profession.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to utilize individual and group supervision for personal and professional growth.
- Students will be able to develop the capacity to evaluate one’s own ministry through self-reflection.
Introduction to Faith-Based Mental Health Counseling in Ministry – $300
- Students will explore the definition and the dynamics of mental health.
- Students will understand various professions in mental health.
- Students will understand the basics of diagnosis and treatment.
- Students will explore the dynamics of Faith-Based Mental Health Counseling in individuals, couples, and groups.
- Students will develop an understanding of developmental models of the spiritual dimension.
- Students will explore spiritual dynamics in Faith-Based Mental Health Counseling crisis and trauma.
Practicum II – 25 hours – $300
- Students will demonstrate the ability to provide a critical analysis of one’s own spiritual/tradition in the helping profession.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to utilize individual and group supervision for personal and professional growth.
- Students will be able to develop the capacity to evaluate one’s own ministry through self-reflection.
Spiritual Assessments, Case Conceptualization, and Interventions – $300
- Students will understand the purpose and value for spiritual assessments.
- Students will learn how to assess the spiritual or Faith-Based Mental Health Counseling needs.
- Students will learn case conceptualization.
- Students will learn the process for treatment planning.
- Students will explore spiritual interventions.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to assess, conceptualize and provide the appropriate intervention.
Internship I – 25 hours – $300
- Students will demonstrate the ability to provide a critical analysis of one’s own spiritual/tradition in the helping profession.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to utilize individual and group supervision for personal and professional growth.
- Students will be able to develop the capacity to evaluate one’s own ministry through self-reflection.
Introduction to Theories and Skills – $300
- Students will explore various theories of counseling
- Students will explore various counseling skills and techniques.
- Students will practice and demonstrate effective theories and skills.
- Students will identify their personal theoretical approach.
- Students will demonstrate their personal theoretical approach.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to assess, conceptualize, and provide the appropriate intervention for their personal theoretical approach.
Internship II – 25 hours – $300
- Students will demonstrate the ability to provide a critical analysis of one’s own spiritual/tradition in the helping profession.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to utilize individual and group supervision for personal and professional growth.
- Students will be able to develop the capacity to evaluate one’s own ministry through self-reflection.
Group Counseling – $300
- Students will learn the different stages of group counseling.
- Students will understand the importance of confidentiality and ethics in group counseling.
- Students will learn the different dynamics and function of group counseling
- Students will explore various types of groups.
Internship III – 25 hours – $300
- Students will demonstrate the ability to provide a critical analysis of one’s own spiritual/tradition in the helping profession.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to utilize individual and group supervision for personal and professional growth.
- Students will be able to develop the capacity to evaluate one’s own ministry through self-reflection.
Human Growth and Development – $300
- Students will define what Human Growth and Development is.
- Students will explore the different stages of human development: physical, cognitive, spiritual, emotional, and social.
- Students will explore cultural and historical perspectives of the life span.
- Students will explore the nature of developmental research.
Internship IV – 25 hours – $300
- Students will demonstrate the ability to provide a critical analysis of one’s own spiritual/tradition in the helping profession.
- Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to utilize individual and group supervision for personal and professional growth.
- Students will be able to develop the capacity to evaluate one’s own ministry through self-reflection.
Practicum – 25 hours in 2 semesters = 50 hours *
Internship – 25 hours in 2 semester 50 hours*
Semester 1 – Observation
Semester 2 – Advance Observation
Semester 3 – Supervisor Observation
Semester 4 – Practical Observation
* Students will have the opportunity to complete additional clinical and supervision hours to receive Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Units from The College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP) or The Institute For Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT) with additional qualifications, hours and cost.
